Paranorthern: And the Chaos Bunny A-Hop-Calypse by Stephanie Cooke
4.0
A fantasy graphic novel about Abby, a young witch & her 3 BFFs – Silas (pumpkinhead), Hannah (a ghost from a different dimension), & Gita (wolf-girl) who work together to close a portal to another dimension that Abby accidently opened. She learns that she comes from a strong line of witches & certain witches have the ability for very powerful magic.
I felt like I dropped into the middle of a book series. I wish to know more about this supernatural world – I think this book sets up for more to come. Hoping there will be more world building in future installments.
I did have some issues with the mom character. While she is supportive & loving, she’s not there for her 2 children. She works a lot & is a single mother but requesting her middle schooler to man their café without adult supervision is irresponsible & she doesn’t even realize that her kid doesn’t want to come to her for help about something really scary because she didn’t want to burden her already over-worked mom. And the younger daughter was being bullied IN THE DARK ALLEY & no one addresses this!
There is soft LBGTQIA+ middle-grade romance towards the end that is warm & light-hearted.
All in all – it’s a very enjoyable read for middle grade readers. The PSL ending was hilarious. Pumpkinhead really is bothered by how many pumpkins were murdered to make PSL.
