Seven Summers is a contemporary romance, focusing on the love story between Finn and Liv. They have a whirlwind romance when she returns to Cornwall after her degree, but things have to end when he returns to LA.
From this point on I felt irritated by both of them. They clearly liked each other a lot, but each had their own baggage to deal with. Instead of really doing this they set up a ridiculous scenario where they vow to get together each summer if they are both single.
We follow their story through the subsequent six key summers and the events that each brings. On this seventh summer Liv meets someone new, Tom, and allows herself to picture getting her happy ever after.
As if the characters hadn’t suffered enough, they have to endure more heartbreak. This felt like just too much to put people through.
Perhaps it would have been kinder if Finn and Liv had left their relationship as a happy memory of the past and moved on. Certainly that would have been the more credible scenario. As for the ending…perhaps it was inevitable in the context of what had been set up but it all felt too much for me.
