Dark Matter by Blake Crouch
4.0
Jason is walking home on a chilly night in Chicago after having a drink with a friend when his reality shatters. The last words he hears before a masked abductor knocks him unconscious are “Are you happy with your life?”. He awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits. But the world he wakes up in is not the one he knows: his wife is not his wife, his son is not born, and Jason is not a college psychics professor. Jason is desperate to get back to the life he knew, but he will have to confront the darkest parts of himself to do so.
DARK MATTER is such an interesting and intricate read. I was quickly hooked into the story from the first few minutes of the audiobook, desperate to know more about what has happened to Jason and how he will find his way home. I loved the sci-fi aspects of this story – they were so well done and so compelling. I struggled to picture a way that Jason could return to his normal life because it just felt so impossible – this is a good thing though, it made me very curious as to how the author would pull this off … or if he would at all.
As I began listening to this audiobook, I had the distinct feeling that DARK MATTER feels oddly similar to this author’s novel, Recursion (which I read first), but it ends up being wildly different (again, in a good way!).
The plot is mind bending, complex, and so very compelling as Jason learns about the impact of choices and the paths not taken. It’s a book that really makes you think. It’s also fast-paced, thrilling, and has just the right amount of suspense!
