The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune
3.0
I enjoyed this book a lot and sped through it but it did feel like it was missing something, and I’m not sure what. The world building here got a little messy in parts- some pieces feeling incomplete and some metaphors not really lining up. Some parts were too corny for me, especially at the end. Some of the messages here were force fed to me when they could have been delivered through the story. I didn’t love the repetitive characterization of the kids. The allegory here seemed to sugarcoat the complexities of injustices in the world, and it felt very one note and un revolutionary. Some conversations just felt like an excuse for Klune to write his “we’re all the same on the inside I don’t see color” cold take. Also this book had my pet peeve where the first kiss is in public instead of a sweet, private moment (Love, Simon movie adaptation I’m looking at you).
