Eleanor, Eleanor, Not Your Real Name by Kathryn Cowles
5.0
I've never been a huge fan of poetry - it was always the hardest unit in my English lit classes in high school and my Spanish lit classes in college. And I've never read it for 'fun' - until this book of poems.
The reason I chose this book for my first foray into poetry-for-fun is because I know the poet. Kathryn is a professor of creative writing at the same college where I teach. We began working there at the same time, so we met in our faculty orientation, met for coffee a few times, and are working on a community based research project and poetry workshop for next year. I feel like such a name-dropper!
Because Kathryn and I are friends, I decided to attend the poetry reading she had on campus a few weeks ago (my first). I was impressed. So when I was in the college store a few days later and saw her book, I bought it. And then I read it - out loud. My AP literature teacher in high school, Mrs. Reed, taught us that poetry was meant to be read a loud. So Sancho got to hear all of the poems, too.
The book is short, and so are most of the poems. And I liked them all - I really liked them all. I liked the underlying themes that ran through the poems throughout book. I liked the stream-of-consciousness feel of the poems. And I liked sense of discovery and the experience of newness that a lot of the poems evoked. In fact, I liked the poems so much, I might just read another one....just for fun.
