Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston
5.0
AUTOMATIC 5 STARS LITERALLY SO GOOD IM CRYING IM LAUGHING IM FEELING ALL OF THE EMOTIONS!!!
okay like. I DONT EVEN KNOW WHERE TO START AJSJDJEH
this book is SO FUNNY. like genuinely SO FUNNY. Casey McQuiston UNDERSTANDS LIKE... MILLENNIAL/GEN Z I GUESS HUMOR SO. WELL. so often even in like text messages authors will still be like “lol can’t w8 2 c u” and it’s like....that’s not....no. but ALL THE JOKES IN THIS BOOK ARE FLAWLESS AND FUNNY AND NO ONE CAN TELL ME OTHERWISE.
second....I feel like most of the time I’m not proud to be from Texas but this book MAKES ME FUCKING LOVE BEING FROM TEXAS!! YES I AM A YEEHAW BITCH! WHAT ABOUT IT! I truly...this sounds dumb but I didn’t recognize the lack of “y’all” in books until this book. I say y’all. My friends say y’all. seeing y’all culture in a book? yeehaw bitch!
the bits about politics in this book were SO GOOD. they weren’t formulated like the entire DNC platform in a massive info dump. they were smartly placed where they would have emotional punches and really evoke feelings in you and it WORKED. also like...not to be that bitch but I DO feel like I saw a lot of myself in Alex and seeing that made me feel valid!
and the romance. the literal reason this book exists. FLAWLESS. enemies to lovers is THE BEST romance trope don’t even TRY to change my mind. both Henry and Alex were SUCH GOOD CHARACTERS, they were witty and funny but REAL and watching their relationship grow was just *chefs kiss* SO BEAUTIFUL!! all the characters were so good though like even down to the secret service agents, everyone has flushed out enough that they jumped off the page, no one was flat.
of course this book had some element of wish fulfillment in it: a world where we had a female president, the first female president. is it escapism? yes. but it’s inspiring, truthful, beautiful magical escapism that we honestly need every once in a while! if anything, I’m even more inspired by this book, by seeing what the world *could* be like. to quote my most recent obsession, hadestown, “to the world we dream about, and the one we live in now.” we’re not there yet. but hopefully we’re on the way.
okay I’m done trying to be fake deep just. PERFECTION LIT RALLY PERFECTION LUV!
