'The nineteenth century would, assuredly, not pass, contended the doctor, without Africa having been compelled to surrender the secrets she has kept locked up in her bosom for six thousand years.'

A classic golden age of adventure tale. The three adventurers (young Joe was my fav with his abundant enthusiasm, courage, and selflessness) had a fun dynamic between them and I enjoyed their characters. They encounter all the wild beasties, scary cannibals, and bad weather in their flight across Africa. There are scenes that are so tense!! Really edge-of-your-seat reading at times!
