The Devil You Know: Stories of Human Cruelty and Compassion by Eileen Horne, Gwen Adshead

5.0

This is one of my favourite books of all time. I'm really into true crime and this book speaks on something I have been thinking for years. It's so easy to hate people to commit awful crimes and write them off as evil but ultimately they doesn't deal with the problem. Locking someone up for life without a thought as to why this happened is dangerous for society as a whole. How can we look at criminals with more compassion to understand they were humans with severe mental health issues and not enough means to help themselves before they become criminals. I've learned so much from this book and hope to read it again in the future. The author does such a good job weaving through stories but also teaching us more about the the prison system is run, how physiatry works, mental health systems in place for various types of people in the UK, and even some interesting cases that are relevant to points she is trying to make. All without feeling like we are cheering far away from the story. Brilliant book that I can't recommend enough!
