The Secret Tree by Patrick Bousum, Jeff Bennington

5.0

Andy Harper is a young boy who is doing his best to step into the too-big shoes of his father, who left the family three years ago, and grandfather, who recently passed.

His neighbour, elderly Mr Beasley, is sick and Andy is sent over to him with a meal from his mama. He is fascinated to find that Mr Beasley knew both his father and grandfather extremely well, and even more fascinated when Mr Beasley tells him about his grandfather's secret.

Andy's world is changed forever by this secret (and no I'm not going to give it away), and becomes a very different place for Andy – he can never go back. His heart and courage are tested to their limits, as well as his sense of right and wrong, good and evil.

Jeff Bennington and Patrick Bousum take us through Andy's trials in such a way that we feel every high and low along with Andy and his friends. I was right behind him, pushing him onward, desperately hoping he'll succeed, and could not put the book down until the last page. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
