Mr. Darcy's Enchantment: A Pride & Prejudice Variation by Abigail Reynolds

4.5

I'm a big P&P fan, and have really been enjoying all the JAFF. I'm NOT really a fan of Fae. But this blend of the two worked really well for me, and I absolutely enjoyed it. Very unique approach, and so there were some twists and turns that couldn't have happened in any other variation.

I borrowed this with KindleUnlimited, text only, although audible would have been available with whispersync for $7.49 and almost wish I'd gone that route (I listened to the sample and the narration sounded good). I'm not able to devote as much time to "just reading" so this took me a little while to get through.

****************
Original Read was March2021 - a read with my eyes. 2024 went ahead and did a reread (listen) going with the audiobook this time. Also included in AudiblePlus and on Hoopla. It's been about three years since my first read, and it was interesting to see how much I remembered, and how much I didn't. A lot of it I couldn't have recounted before I began again, but as the story moved on, it would trigger the memory and I'd pretty much know what was coming. It was quite dark (true Fey stories often are), but darker than I'd remembered.

Listening - I noted a few of the "words" I try to track ... deign, dais, tress, smirk, scowl, ululations.
No proFanity. A little more sexual than the original, but not too explicit.

Basic TOC - 18 chapters with an epilogue. The Kindle copy includes a glossary of terms. Nice info to have, although not as helpful after the fact (maybe should be placed at the front?) Third Person // Past Tense. Omniscient narrator mostly featuring Lizzie's POV, but we also get Darcy and just general overseeing of everything.

I'm not sure if it was still a 5* (original rating). Maybe my tastes have changed a bit ... I'm not overly fond of Fae, and some of this just seemed a little too much, and a little long, but still one of the better and more creative re-creations out there.
