The Spanish Love Deception by Elena Armas
5.0
"He sort of looked like the man behind Superman's secret identity. Not the one with the cape, the one who wore a suit, had a nine-to-five job, and was kind of…hot for a guy working in an office. Not that I'd ever admit that out loud. Not even to Rosie."
Our protagonist Catalina despises her coworker, the perfect Aaron Blackford. However, Aaron offers to be her date after hearing Catalina vent to her friend Rosie about her sister's wedding. Aaron's suggestion leads Catalina into a whirl as she wonders why Aaron offers to be her date, knowing that she does not like him. Aaron's offer leads Catalina to try to escape from her lie to her family about a new boyfriend, but in the end, she takes Aaron to Spain for her sister's wedding and to meet her parents.
One of the few cute reads of August, with this enemy to lovers rom-com, delivers on the slight misunderstanding viewed as hate when it was Aaron's adverse reaction to Catalina is so well done. Aaron, who doesn't express himself well, starts to open up to Catalina as he sees this wedding as an opportunity to show Catalina that his feelings for her isn't hate. Once the pair land in Spain, Aaron realizes that Catalina is hiding a part of her past from him. Despite the secret, Aaron starts to open up to her and her family. As Aaron grows closer to Catalina's family, she starts to worry about her feelings for Aaron and possibly repeating the same mistake from her past.
This book is a cute fast pace read, with a likable protagonist who aims for perfection but struggles for acceptance in her job profession. With the character Aaron resembling Clark Kent, it was hard to hate this book. A breath of fresh air after reading the disappointing Hades by Carly Spade.
