Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds

4.0

Summary: Boy rides the elevator on his way to avenge his brother's murder. At each floor, a victim of gun violence gets on and gives advice.

This book is written in verse, and I love that about it.

I love getting pieces of information about his life on each floor and building a more complete and complex story by the time he gets to the ground floor.

My students were captivated by this book as well, and I think it's masterfully written.

That said, I do think there are parts of the book which simplify the tangled issue of gun violence in society. It has to because one book can't capture exactly how complicated the issue is, though.
