When Princess Floralinda is trapped on the fortieth floor of a monster infested tower by a witch with quite the flair for the dramatic she ably waits to be rescued by a Prince, as one supposedly does. Anyway, once they've all been munched by the rather opulent Dragon on the first floor she fairly quickly realises that her only option is to work her way down past all the terrible beasties on the various floors if she wishes to escape.
Initially this doesn't go well but aided rather reluctantly by Cobweb, a bottom of the garden Fairy with notions, she eventually begins to make progress. The whole tale is a lovely twist on the age old Princess trapped in a tower awaiting rescue story and it's wonderful to see Floralinda slowly change and adapt over the course of having to do some rather quite horrid things to some rather quite horrid creatures.
It's funny, acerbic tale that's full of wit, and just the right level of horrible at times. Floralinda and Cobweb make for a wonderful double act with Floralinda bumbling her way through things initially and relying on Cobwebs intelligence and rather dark obsession with crafting the bits of various dead monsters into useful items. The floor by floor structure for chapters works really well too and overall its just a terrifically enjoyable read full of humour.
