Othello by William Shakespeare
3.5
I think a 3.5 is probably more accurate? When I hold it up against Hamlet it just doesn’t have the same strokes of brilliance for me.
Not nearly so many iconic lines or monologues. I think Roderigo was my favorite character and only because he’s kind of an idiot. I’d love to see someone modernize and satirize this one because there’s a lot of material here that I did kinda laugh at, but I wasn’t sure I was supposed to. (Roderigo’s “what should I do?”, “I’ll incontinently drown myself.” Was probably my favorite scene.)
There are some definite racist stereotypes and undertones at play. There’s a lot of misogyny, although I’ll give Shakespeare credit, the actual women characters weren’t portrayed as the way the men spoke of them. They seemed to me pretty well rounded.
In the end I was reminded a little of Romeo and Juliet and it just doesn’t feel that inventive.
Will keep reading Shakespeare. Hope to hit up Macbeth before the end of the year.
