This started out as a pretty straightforward-seeming magic-heavy very alternate history, building slowly but steadily to something I couldn't quite see, and then all of a sudden there's this growing snowball of social revolution coming right for everyone, and it was amazing. I'm going to have to read the next book ASAP.
