The Silence Between Us by Alison Gervais
4.0
A book with ASL. A Deaf teen as the main character. Who isn’t pitied by the narration.
It’s short and a little shallow. I would have liked more exploration in the experience of finding interpreters.
I thought I maybe wanted Beau or Nina to pursue interpretation BUT I’m actually really glad the author didn’t take that route. It would have felt like Maya’s Deafness became the focus of their lives and as the parent of a HoH kiddo...it’s not the focus of loved ones’ lives.
Overall, a lovely story, a wonderful Own Voices moment and some representation that is desperately needed.
