It’s good. I liked it. But it didn’t exactly do anything new and surprising for the genre. There were a lot of Almosts that I really expected would happen, but ultimately the ending was predictable enough (save for two minor curveballs) that left me at a 3-star rating.


If you want YA dystopian fantasy - this is a great read. I will be continuing the series for sure, it has a an interesting world and conflict and I really want to understand more of the magic system and history of the country. The important characters felt fleshed out enough and their motivations made sense.
