The Art Thief by Michael Finkel

Oh my gosh what a truly fascinating and absorbing book. It’s the story of Stephane Breitweiser, who stole millions of dollars of art from museums all over Europe before he was caught. He stole not for money but because he loved the art works. He surrounded himself with his stolen goods in his apartment above his mother’s house in Loos, France. It was astounding to read about how he easily stole art from under the noses of security guards and museum goers repeatedly. The lack of security in the museums containing millions of dollars worth of beautiful works was astonishing- hopefully the directors of these institutions will read this book and tighten security. Equally astounding was the European justice system which meted out seemingly light sentences for such high level crimes. I read this book from the library but I will be buying it for my shelves.
