I enjoyed returning to Sugar Island in “Warrior Girl Unearthed”, though I would’ve benefited from a reread of “Firekeeper’s Daughter”. “Warrior Girl Unearthed” follows Perry Firekeeper-Birch as she participates in her tribe’s summer internship program and learns about repatriation. I loved learning about NAGPRA and repatriation alongside Perry. I loved how issues like repatriation were seamlessly woven into the plot. Boulley does an excellent job of including bigger issues in YA. The pacing was slow at the start, but the ending is jam packed in a way that reminded me of what I loved about “Firekeeper’s Daughter”. I listened to the audiobook and recommend this format to hear the Ojibwe language used throughout the novel. I recommend this interesting, powerful YA read for all readers.
