Teen novel set in the far future after near destruction by the hot sun. Main character is Gaia Stone whose mother is a midwife. Gaia is learning the skills from her mother. Midwives must give the first 3 babies born each month to the enclave where they get new parents and a better life. No one questions the morality of this until Gaia's parents are arrested. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, very different and the storyline well handled. Thought provoking and with an open ended conclusion.
