Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

4.0

Ok, I have a lot of thoughts about this book. But I don’t want to go into too much detail, so here are the things I found most relevant:
1. Is it as good as Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom? No. BUT it is still a good read and if you are a fan of the Grishaverse or want to get into the books, then Shadow and Bone is a good point to start. It makes a thrilling read, that I couldn’t put down and I needed to know what happens to Alina, Mal and the Darkling.
2. Would I recommend it to “older” people? Also no. I think this book is for teens and young adults, even though the story takes a dark turn. The way it is written though, I think, speaks to a younger audience.
3. Was the story predictable? Yes. I mean the main antagonist is called the DARKLING. AND HE WEARS ALL BLACK. Do I need to say more?

But all in all, I enjoyed the book and liked most of the characters even though it is, as I mentioned, not as diverse as Six of Crows. Sticking with Alina as the protagonist in Shadow and Bone is still a great choice as you get to explore the world of the Grisha with her.

The ending is great, closing off the main story but still leaving some questions unanswered to make the sequel feel like a logical next step and not something that is forced.
