Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
5.0
reread 2021: daisybilly supremacy that’s all i have to say this time
Oh my god. Oh my god. OH. MY. GOD.
THIS BOOK WAS SO! GOOD!
I had high hopes because I *loved* Evelyn Hugo and let me just say....I wasn’t disappointed in the slightest.
This book is just...so atmospheric. Honestly Taylor Jenkins Reid high key has me convinced that this is a real band with real music...all of the characters just leap off the page. Obviously big main characters like Billy and Daisy shine spectacularly but even secondary characters like Camila or Teddy felt so true and real. Also the women in this book? Go off! The messages were so feminist without coming off like Feminism™! Daisy’s messages of taking no shit from anybody, of owning her own work and her life were so empowering. I posted this as I was reading but I loved little moments like this:
“That’s how it was back then. I was just supposed to be the inspiration for some man’s great idea.
Well, fuck that.
...I had absolutely no interest in being somebody else’s muse.
I am not a muse.
I am the somebody.
End of fucking story.”
Also kudos to Taylor Jenkins Reid for coming up with lyrics to a WHOLE ALBUM? TALENT!
Also...you could FEEL the Fleetwood Mac running through this book and I, as one of many people who would lay down their life for Stevie Nicks, APPRECIATED IT SO MUCH. There’s a moment that’s all but a direct reference to Stevie and Lindsey Buckingham performing Silver Springs on the Dance and just....Stevie STARING at him as she sings “YOU WILL NEVER GET AWAY FROM THE SOUND OF THE WOMAN THAT LOVES YOU....” and to see that intensity in this novel? PERFECTION.
In summary: PLEASE READ THIS BOOK. You won’t regret it I promise.
