The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper by Hallie Rubenhold

4.0

This was sad and fascinating at the same time. Rather than focusing on the grisly details of Jack the Ripper's crimes and dismissing his victims as "just prostitutes," the author provides 5 short biographies of the women that he killed. The focus here is 100% on the women. For most of them, the author was able to provide details about their childhoods, marriages, children, etc.

Anyone who has read or watched something about the crimes owes it to themselves (and probably these women) to go beyond the gore and morbid details of the crime and learn about the humanity of the women who have nearly been forgotten.
