A Girlhood: A Letter to My Transgender Daughter by Carolyn Hays

fast-paced

4.0

It's hard for me to know what to say about this book. At times it's quite poignant and touching and other times I found it to be almost patronizing, if not condescending. It was originally meant exclusively for the author's daughter and there's about a decade, from the few ages and years the author provides, between her and I so the parts I found patronizing may largely be due to that age gap and the differences in how we were raised. Like, I can't imagine a parent writing and giving a letter like this to their teenage daughter but that speaks more to the strained relationship I've always had with my parents (let alone their reactions to me coming out as trans.) Either way, the love she has for her daughter is clear from the beginning to the end and that's beautiful!!
