1984 by George Orwell

dark informative reflective sad tense slow-paced
  • Loveable characters? No

3.0

“Being in a minority, even in a minority of one, did not make you mad. There was truth and there was untruth, and if you clung to the truth even against the whole world, you were not mad.”

3.5 because it was plusgood but not Superplusgood

What fell short for me was the format. This is a good message, but not a very good novel. It could've worked better as an essay, and it wouldn't had dragged on more than necessary.
I also felt like the story line kept interrupting Orwell on what he wanted to say more than aided him in getting it through, which is why he had to include a Non-fiction book within his own book.
However, the dystopian world created here was fascinating. I was mostly intrigued by the language Newspeak. In a weird way it made me think about the urban/internet slang that we use and the abbreviations we create.
In the Appendix there's was piece on "The Principles of Newspeak" and how its vocabulary is divided, which I had a great time reading. So now wonder that some of my favorite quotes are:

“Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thought-crime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it."

And the terrifying idea of:

"Even the slogans will change. How could you have a slogan like ‘freedom is slavery’ when the concept of freedom has been abolished?"

On the story itself, The plot was good and I honestly did not expect it.
I wasn't convinced with the "love" relationship... just didn't feel right. but I understand its purpose to the message of the book.
The idea of demolishing parenthood and family relations + the privation of desire in the act of sex- those concepts were impactful!

I would recommend it to everyone. It's an important work that is thought-provoking. So go ahead and read it! You'll definitely get something out of it.
