I refuse to read Tom Clancy and I haven’t read House of Leaves because I have it on good authority that it’s cursed, but something in me says that The Militia House is like if Tom Clancy wrote a haunted house novel and it absolutely slayed. My favorite horror trope, bar none, is “this house is shapeshifting.” If doors are disappearing, I am THERE! This novel is such a concise and clever spin on the classic haunted house story and delivers such a clear message on PTSD and how the effects of war never truly leave the body. Stunning execution with truly creepy moments that get under your skin.
