Lightlark by Alex Aster

3.25

Overall I enjoyed the majority of this read, appreciating that it’s YA and doesn’t necessarily delve into the same depth of character and world development as some of my more beloved adult-audience books do.
I enjoyed the centennial storyline, the adventure to break the curses and save Lightlark whilst navigating a tournament style game and choosing who to trust.
I did regularly feel suspicious of the person who ended up being the villain, but only as much as I felt suspicious of everyone else at one point or another, so it still felt surprising and I enjoyed that part of it.
The ending was totally hotting up and became super compelling, and then twist after twist came in such quick succession that it just felt stupid. And as a reader I actually wasn’t happy with how things were playing out, I spent the last few chapters scowling at the page in confusion. I’m a Grim girlie and therefore I finished the book feeling really disappointed.
I may or may not pick up the sequel in the hopes Grim gets his redemption but I may also be setting myself up for more disappointment so I don’t know.
Overall just feeling really numb following this book’s conclusion🤷‍♀️
