This book is a short, fast paced YA supernatural story that is a quick read. It seemed to be a retelling and from what I noticed online it’s mentioned to be a re-imagining of the Arthurian legend. I am not 100% familiar with that fable so I cannot agree. What I did notice is this was very similar to the X-Men (the movie not the comic).
Ember being Rogue and Hayden being Bobby but with different powers. The mansion (similar to the Xavier institute) located deeply away from outsiders filled with kids who have different powers. Although the kids go to the small towns high school which is normal and the gifted kids only use/practice their powers at home and not in front of non gifted people. None of them have abilities that make them look different though like X-Men characters so they blend in society.
The supernatural aspects of the book are definitely interesting, but not necessarily unique. That didn’t take away from my interest in reading it.
Ember’s power is obviously a tremendous problem which is a large focus of the book but not main plot.
The romance between Ember and Hayden is filled with the sparks and intensity of most young love with a forbidden factor. Similarly to being told “no, you need to stay away” and the kids not listening relates to many teens rebelling against their parents when they want something.
The fact that they can only touch for short amounts of time heightens the tension between the two. Hayden is shown to be obsessed with Ember and have strong feelings immediately. She's instantly attracted to Hayden, but it takes some time for her to trust and love him. That gives their relationship a little more depth and authenticity. It’s not instant love on both sides and Hayden had years to think about her and watch from afar.
I enjoy this authors books and picked this one for a quick read. Although this isn’t my favorite book of hers, the story kept me interested in finding the truth and if their relationship would last and not end tragedy.
