Emperor of Ruin by Django Wexler
5.0
In general, this whole series is literally incredible. The imagination, the pacing, the writing. At no point does the reader’s intelligence come into question; there are no info-dumps, no needless repetitions, no slaps in the face. And the characters are all so three dimensional and you can tell that they were constructed with care and purpose. The world building didn’t at any point feel overwhelming and it was so brilliantly portrayed that even words that were pretty much Latin to me made sense in context. There’s something for everyone here.
Eurgh, I am just so happy. I like high fantasy but a lot of the time there is just no way to get into some of those books - they’re convoluted, rambling, slow to get started etc. This series is the perfect meeting of so many of my favourite things. In the first two books I did feel that Gyre’s emotions were kind of skated over more than Maya’s, for example, when it came to love/sex. But by the third I totally got why. At the end of the day, it’s not a romance so I’m not too bothered by it.
Also I loveeeeeee pervy spider Kit! Her scenes gave me some of my biggest laughs.
Sadly, as with all good things, it must come to an end. Which is crazy when you consider there are some series out there with 6+ books. Like??? Can we get one more, Django? Pretty please? I absolutely need just a little more. Not that the way it ended was unsatisfactory - but I’ve become greedy for this world. And Gyre??? I can’t even pronounce his damn name but I’m obsessedddddd with him.
