I loved the prose. It was beautiful to read as well as raw and honest at the same time, along with the shifting between “you” and “I” as Machado from the present speaks to her past self. Not to mention how the story is structured with the narrative broken in chapters as vignettes from childhood to the Dream House. I also love the fairy tale elements woven into the footnotes. The memoir follows Machado as she navigates an emotionally abusive relationship, coping with the pain and trauma, with the Dream House as a metaphor, a haunted place. It’s an archive of her experiences, her record of a toxic relationship and her pain. It explores abuse in queer relationships and the struggle with how invisible it is. The way it comes with feeling unseen and unheard since society tends to ignore abuse in queer relationships. Overall, I really enjoyed the experimental approach to the memoir.
