Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk
5.0
This novel, if you haven't watched the film adaptation, takes the reader into this self-destructive life of an unnamed protagonist. One thing that I did notice within this novel is that the protagonist does not say his name. The unnamed protagonist is in constant awe of Tyler Durden's "genius". There are moments in this novel that the protagonist is drawing attention to random details that are odd. On one aspect, this novel is an interesting comment on the consumerism of the U.S. and our desperation to ignore the mundane nature of our existence. In the other, it's a novel about men lost in a society so different from their absent fathers trying to find their place in society. Of course, their answer to that is to find ways to destroy the current status quo and recreate the society in "their" or rather Tyler Durden's image. This novel is a crazy turn of events. It is truly difficult to fully understand the message of Palahniuk with this novel. However, the drastic nature of the protagonist trying to escape his routine and perfect apartment with this perfect furniture. Tyler an interesting antagonist who is trying to create a new society. Tyler does not have any true motivation other than the current status quo sickens him. The book is an interesting look at the male view and the desperation of trying to escape a life similar to their absent father.
One thing that I truly found terrifying is that after the protagonist "kills" himself and Tyler, he is surrounded by people who are whispering in his ear about lying in wait for the great Tyler Durden.
The protagonist creates this larger than life persona but in the end, he finds himself trying to escape it. But the underground life he created refuses to let him escape and that is truly terrifying.
