My Plain Jane by Jodi Meadows, Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand

5.0

My laughter woke up my husband several times while listening to this late at night. I enjoyed it just as much as the first, though this is a stand alone. You don't need to have read My Lady Jane first, though you ought to know the story of Jane Eyre or you'll be lost.

This is a reimagining of Jane Eyre with Charlotte Bronte as one of the characters. All the Bronte sisters attend Lowood School, actually. There are murders, ghost hunters (complete with Ghost Busters jokes) and loads of book & pop culture references. It's basically this hilarious comic in book form:

Source: Hark, A Vagrant.

Okay, that's over simplifying things. Here are some fave quotes:

Who you gonna call?

“If there was something strange in your neighborhood, you could, um, write the Society a letter, and they would promptly send an agent to take care of it.”

“Never in any Jane Austen novel did the love interest pretend to be a fortune-teller," Helen said, "Why would someone do that?” (Hahahahahahahaha)

“I have a thing for Rochester," confessed Jane. "It's not healthy.” (Hahahahaha!)

I think if you like the Bronte sisters and Austen and you are enamored with Jane Eyre even though Rochester is problematic, you'll like this.
