Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

emotional lighthearted medium-paced

5.0

This book was not written for us readers, but for the author herself.

This beautifully written book shows the connection of food and love between a mother and her child. It shows us how even through the struggles and the fights, a mother's love for her daughter is immense, and vice versa.

One thing I loved about this book is that it is intense and emotional; each chapter opened up the possibility to reflect on the author's life, while reflecting on our own relationships. I loved the depiction of Korean culture, along with the traditions and rituals.

My grandfather died of cancer. After much pain, suffering and sorrow, he left this world. The process was difficult more than words can explain. Those of us who have experienced the loss of a loved one connect completely with this book. At least, I like to think so. The author shares the entire experience, from the first diagnosis to the process of her mother's illness. Every sentence I read brought back memories of my mother and grandmother nursing my grandfather. The feelings that came up when we woke up and went to sleep. The desire to help and do more, but at the same time collapse and know that getting better was almost impossible. I was really fascinated by this book.

Overall, this book is not part of the genre I usually read, but it was worth every second.
