Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice

“The world isn't ending. Our world isn't ending. It already ended. It ended when the Zhaagnash came into our original home down south on that bay and took it from us. That was our world.”

There are so many things I love about this book I find it hard to describe why it has become one of my favorites.

The story centres around Evan Whitesky and his family who live in an Anishnaabe community in Northern Ontario, and how the community deals with losing contact with the southern part of the province and losing their electricity, phone coverage, food and fuel supply. Winter is setting in, and the community is cut off.

This book isn't just about the apocalypse, it's about so much more than that. It's about the difficult history modern day Natives and white people share. The struggles of Native people up to this day, because of that tragic past and what was taken from them. But it's also a story about their resilience.

This book took me to a whole new world. It grabbed me out of my seat from the moment I started reading. Couldn't tell where it was going next. Loved the atmosphere the author created. Highly recommended!
