Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto
3.0
Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto is an Indonesian murder mystery/ wedding drama that will have you rolling!
Let's start with the premise, Meddelin (Meddy) Chan is stuck on a date from hell because her well-meaning mother pretended to be her on a dating app. As the night progresses and her date gets a bit handsy, one thing leads to another, and then bam- she kills her date! As if this weren't bad enough, her family is coordinating the most lavish event the next day that could make or break their wedding business.
What's a girl to do with a dead body in the middle of the night? She calls her support system, AKA her mother and aunts and the story that ensues is equal parts comical theatrics and eye-rolling stunts.
I relished Dial A for Aunties and the ridiculous sequence of events that intensified in both drama and outlandish schemes as the plot progressed. Reading this felt like a slow train crash that you could not look away from!
I enjoyed the diversity and Representation of Indonesian culture and, I believe the author brilliantly captured the insights into and fundamental differences between the third and fourth Indonesian generations.
When it comes to traditional Indonesian families, the elders place extremely high and sometimes unrealistic expectations on the younger ones. As seen in the novel, this can lead to two drastic outcomes-Flee as far away as you possibly can, or in Meddy's case, stay and bear the burden of their constant scrutiny and controlling mannerisms. The younger generations are made to feel as if they are toeing the line between love and suffocation, tradition and modernization, respect and difference of opinion.
I enjoyed how she exposed the superficiality of the wedding industry and the unrealistic expectations of brides and grooms. Having a groom-zilla and a sexually confused bride was such a fun and unconventional spin.
Dial A for Aunties I would say is very slight on the second chance romance and heavy on the outlandish plots and scheming. It centers around the bonds of family, superstitious curses, murder investigation and a wedding gone wrong.
