Before We Were Trans: A New History of Gender by Kit Heyam
4.5
So good, very thoughtfully written. The chapters and individual stories are a little short and feel more like a starting point to learn about each of these people and their cultures than a full profile, but this was a starting point for me on a lot of these topics so I enjoyed it.
This was about the future of historical research as much as it was about gender as well, and the discussions on what historical study means to different people was just as valuable.
