Sundial by Catriona Ward

5.0

“Everyone has one story that explains them completely. I thought I knew what mine was. I was wrong—-I am in it, here and now. This will be the choice that defines me. The decision tree unfolds before my eyes, the terrible fruit at the end of each branch.”

When I tell you this book was f*ked up

I mean

THIS BOOK WAS FCKED UP

4.5/5 stars

The amount of quotes that I re read over and over because they were equally beautiful and haunting. So much so that this 280 novel felt like 400 pages to me jn the best way.

Catriona Ward wrote a near-perfect horror novel and it’s not the Last House on Needless Street. It’s Sundial.

Some standout quotes to show you how stunning this was:

“When people say something is "unthinkable," what they usually mean is that they don't want to think it. They are resistant to an idea. But that is not what unthinkable means. I understand that, now. It means to be confronted with a thought so vast, dark, and monstrous that it will not fit into any known shapes in your mind.”

“The mess of adult life, where you've both dug in so deep, where blame is a tapestry so tightly woven that it cannot ever be unpicked.”

“Sometimes I lie awake at night and picture Sundial like a layer cake or a medieval painting of hell. All the hidden things, lives pressing down on one another, the weight of years, and the heat of guilt forging them diamond-hard. Indestructible secrets lie in the ground at Sundial.”
