I had really high hopes for this book and don't get me wrong it was good, I just wanted more. I sadly didn't like it as much as I thought. The build-up didn't work for me, I wasn't glued to the pages as I normally am, and throughout the book, I didn't feel that invested.
I had a hard time liking the main character. I think the author was going for a complex character which he was because sometimes I loved him and sometimes I found him irritating and over-repeated. In the end, I knew he had changed for the better but I feel like it was touched on so briefly and quickly that I almost didn't register what had changed.
I loved Felicity, she was an absolute charm to have in the book, at first I was conflicted about her bc I thought her character would be unimportant but she was by far the best part of the book!
I am very much a character person and she was one of the reasons I kept being interested in the book.
I loved all the different places they were traveling to and how the story started to unravel itself, It followed a very well-thought-out storyline which I greatly appreciate and liked!
Now, I went into this book thinking it was a love story, which it is and it isn't. It's a love story told with 5 chapters in between where the two love interests interact in a somewhat loving way. In my head this is not a love story, this is a historical fiction with a B-plot romance that doesn't get a lot of development in my opinion. I wanted more basically from this book especially the love part since that is what the book introduces to us the reader firstly, a boy who is in love with his best friend but is sure he doesn't feel the same back!
I loved how the trio traveled together and how we got to know the characters better and better.
I loved the pirate arc and all the interactions between our main and the chief!
In the end, I didn't feel satisfied but it was still a good read and for the most part, I enjoyed the story.
