Like Death by Guy de Maupassant, Richard Howard
4.0
“Like Death” is a beautiful short novel by Guy de Maupassant. It is about a successful artist at the peak of his reputation and powers who enters into a love affair. You watch as the artist ages, starts being considered less relevant, and tries to make up for this with a growing affection for his paramour’s young daughter. The book has an easy and cynical worldliness with characters portrayed in great depth as they evolve and change. This is the third short novel I’ve read by Maupassant and they have all been excellent, although I preferred [b:Bel-Ami|780581|Bel-Ami|Guy de Maupassant|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1657539241l/780581._SY75_.jpg|2879086].
