Very hot take but I really didn’t love it. I cant tell if I just enjoy being contrarian or if my view is clouded by the fact that Delia Owens is like a really bad person, but I just cannot get on board with how much hype this book is getting rn. Granted, the interweaving of nature and narrative was really beautiful and I’d love to read more fiction written by actual biologists/zoologists/ etc, but otherwise, not so much. I think Delia Owens relies on having the characters speak out loud their emotions, rather than showing us. I think the characters of color don’t have a lot of agency and are just there to support our white woman protag. I think a lot of the details in the trial seemed like they were just thrown in at the end willy nilly. Lots of things that didn’t make me want to jump up and down for this book.
