In the end, the best way to describe this book, I think, is summed up the summary of the book on the Newbery page: "With seeming yet deliberate randomness, Perkins writes an orderly, innovative, and risk-taking book in which nothing happens and everything happens." It's an enjoyable book, excellent for the writing, rather than the storyline.
