Falling in Love with Hominids by Nalo Hopkinson

3.0

This collection of short stories is pretty wild. Nalo Hopkinson has a HUGE imagination. Lots of the stories have some elements to them that made me smile with the pure creativity of it all. There's a ghost mall, indoor elephant, fire breathing chicken, and time travel. If that list doesn't intrigue you then I doubt you'll like this book.

There are blurbs at the start of each story which I liked a lot. They give a little bit of perspective from the author or note what the intention was when writing. They work especially well considering how strange a few of these stories are. I think I both liked and disliked how "writery" these are. There's a Shakespeare inspired story that I couldn't get through. There's also an anthology based on Bordertown that went over my head. I think if you were somebody who was familiar with those works you might love those particular stories, but they didn't resonate with me.

There's enough fun sci fi and fantasy here that I would recommend it to a fan of those genres. Also a recommendation to anybody with an interest in creative writing.
