Family drama isn’t my usual genre of choice, but I was excited to expand my reading palette with The Garnett Girls thanks to a Goodreads giveaway win of an ARC.
I love that this story centers around the relationship between three adult sisters and their mother. It does a good job of showing the good, the bad, and the ugly-the reality for most families that I know. I also enjoyed the setting, both The Isle of Wight and the Sandcove house itself. A home is often made up of your surroundings in addition to the people in your life and this book shows that beautifully.
I did struggle with some of the writing choices. There were several moments where a character was on the cusp of a huge decision or had just gone through a momentous event, and then the story would pick up weeks or months later. There were also a couple of flashback chapters that felt awkward and disjointed.
I do wish I had been able to connect with one of the characters, but unfortunately none of them were likable enough to be invested in their story.
While this was a good beach read for myself, I think it will have a greater reception from readers who do prefer the genre.
