Wake of Vultures by Lila Bowen

3.0

I picked up this book knowing nothing but the title so was really pleasantly surprised when I met the protagonist. Nettie Lonesome lives in the 1870s old west, and is probably born from one Native American parent and one black parent. She's bitter and tough and raised as basically a slave by a horrible couple--until she meets a vampire and kills it.

But this was another book where for me, while the fantasy stuff was done perfectly well, I actually preferred just reading about her as a real young woman hoping to get a job as a horse rangler passing as a boy. The Old West seems actually more interesting to me when it's not populated by every monster around (which nobody can see).
