I was pleasantly surprised by the premise of this book. I had never read about books and blood magic before. Parts of this book were pretty dark and I feel like there should be some warning about that. But for the most part, there are only drops of blood pricked from someone’s finger. I loved the mystery in this story. I could smell the old books. Please, someone teach me how to do mirror spells.
I love the acknowledgment of magic schools being about colonialism. Nice touch. I don’t know where else this story could go but it could follow Ester’s idea of returning the books to the countries they came from. /spoiler> May there be more to come about these characters from this autho.
Graphic: Blood
Minor: Body horror
It’s mostly not gory until the end and then it’s brief but it’s disturbing. Maybe don’t read the last few chapters at night if you’re alone.
