The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
4.25
- depiction of the traumatic affects of racism, the internalization of racist beauty standards, and complicity/collaboration with the oppressive/powerful as an avenue to access personal privilege and/or eke out a survival is really poignant & insightful.
- not an enjoyable or fun read because fucked up shit happens, but I think it's an important story to hear.
- I've never personally been a fan of graphic, detailed depictions of assault/abuse in media b/c I feel like there's an overabundance already today and it can play out as shock value trauma porn, but Morrison did have her reasons for writing this back in the 60s and it was important - there's an afterword in the book that explains
- a matter of fact exposition of CSA & incest, happening within community turning a blind eye
