Finished Butter today, and honestly it was so damn good. Another star in the pantheon of Japanese feminist literature, lushly written (and translated), gorgeous prose and story about what's expected of women, about shame and culture, and feelings around food and desire and loneliness and fatphobia. Truly wonderful book. Also if I had a nickel for every time I read a book this year about women's relationships with food, I think I'd have like? Three nickels. I want more.
Only dinging a quarter of a star because there were so many moments where I thought Yuzuki was going to say something deeper about lust between women + bisexuality + wanting a romantic relationship with other women and it went nowhere... Like, you can't have a woman be like "yah all the girls in my class loved me for my masc swag, my best friend (who's a little in love with me and doesn't really like men) calls me her prince, also I feel such lust and hunger for this woman who I fear and pity" and then go "and they're all still heterosexual and never think about not being straight" ... Yuzuki, miss maam ... Fix it.
