Saga, Vol. 1 by Brian K. Vaughan

5.0

Ahhh, I've been wanting to read this series for months now and I finally ordered the first volume off of Amazon and I read it today and it was so good! This graphic novel is action packed, original, and creative. I don't think I've ever read about such a creative and unique world before. I love the way it's narrated by their infant child. I love the bit when she says: "No matter how we're eventually raised, all of our stories begin the exact same way. They all end the same, too." I think that's really powerful and beautiful. The narrations are all very thoughtful and I love the way she talks about her parents and life in general.

Also, the characters in this graphic novel are so unique and interesting. There are two human looking things with tv's as heads, there is a lady spider called The Stalk who is nude form the waist up and a spider from the waist down. Creepy as hell but it looks pretty cool. Also, The Will is pretty sexy as hell. I'm really into the hard core sexy buzz-cut soldier type.
I loved seeing him defend that six year old sex slave girl, and that was so sad when The Stalk died because he said he loved her and now he wants to get revenge on the men who killed her.
There's also this place called the Sextillion, it's like a whore house in outer space. There is so much nudity in this graphic novel, more than I've ever seen in a book before, but I don't think that's a bad thing. It actually makes it feel more realistic and adult-like.

I'm so surprised by how much I liked it. I love Alana as a character, she's so sassy and jealous and hilarious. I also love how Marko is kind of the complete opposite of her, he's more sensitive and caring and protective, but they fit together so well. Some of the photos in the action scenes look straight out of a movie, it's illustrated so wonderfully. I also just want to mention I love the way chapter one ends with the narrations from the infant child and the picture of the parents kissing, I thought it was really beautiful and well-written.

I can't wait to read more in this series!
