Lie with Me by Philippe Besson

5.0

"This feeling of love, it transports me, it makes me happy. At the same time, it consumes me and makes me miserable, the way all impossible loves are miserable."

Woooow. I haven't read such a free flowing beautiful book for quite some time. Lie With Me perfectly captures the feelings of yearning, of youthful tenderness, of all-consuming first loves, and the devastation of love lost and opportunities missed. With a vibrant voice that matches the likes of Andre Aciman, Besson paints such a vivid and compelling picture of his youth. I couldn't stop reading even though I knew the ending couldn't possibly go the way I wanted it to. But, that's life. It's messy, and complicated. And sometimes we are not as brave or as bold as we would wish to be, and Besson reflects on this in the second half of the novel with a somber honesty.
