2.5

2.5*

I started this book and knew almost instantly that it wasn't much good, prosewise. Or really, storyline-wise?  Even still, I was, at the beginning, very much into this book, despite the fact that I didn't enjoy the prose and the doughnut-slinging aliens didn't really seem to... fit.

And then about midway through the book I was just tired of it. It was tedious. Everything just seemed to happen over and over again, just with endless repetition.  The alien storyline did not seem to fit at all with anything else that was happening in the book, and I'm still convinced that she had the idea for the alien storyline but couldn't quite make a full novel out of it on its own, so she just shoehorned it into this novel.  The author tried to tackle way too many themes at once and didn't quite manage to hit any of them.  I honestly probably would have DNFed this book if I wasn't reading it for book club.

Anyway, the ending was a pleasant upturn in my reading experience, and I enjoyed it very much (it bumped the book up from a 2 to a 2.5, but unfortunately couldn't make up for the rest of the novel.
